Public Speaking for Upper Elementary Schoolers

Course Description:

Public speaking is one of the most versatile skills today: it has applications  whether you intend to debate, to go into the law, to interview for a job, or anything beyond or
between. This eight week summer workshop-style course will take students-assuming little or no experience – through the basics of public speaking, including informational, persuasive, argumentative speeches and debates. The class will be half lecture, half workshop, and will focus on hands-on activities and debate drills that are used in middle and high school debate, as well as collegiate speech and debate. At the end of the course, students should be able to achieve proficiency in confident public speaking and formulating ideas quickly.

Zoom Procedure
Students should expect to have their cameras on at all times, with accommodations for technological difficulties. Because we are learning on computers, it may be easy to switch to other tabs, play games, or do something besides paying attention to the presentation. However, in order to maximize learning and the lesson, it is strongly encouraged that you only keep open the zoom tab we are learning on.
Furthermore, when participating in class, you should make use of the raise hand feature to raise your hand, and stay muted at all times unless called on.

What Homework & Classwork Look Like
Homework will include students preparing a speech, a story, or a topic for debate, which will be
presented in class and discussed. Class lectures will include basic topics of debate and
